Ms. Johnston is an associate with the firm. A member of the Peguis First Nation, Ms. Johnston practices primarily in the areas of Aboriginal Law, Business and Commercial Law, Employment Law, Real Estate and Child Protection Law.
Ms. Johnston acts as legal counsel to a wide variety of individuals and to a number of First Nation organizations. Prior to joining D'Arcy & Deacon LLP, Ms. Johnston was legal counsel at the Federal Department of Justice. While at the Federal Department of Justice, she was a member of the Tax Litigation Group and her practice focused primarily on conducting income tax and employment insurance litigation trials in various sittings in the Tax Court of Canada.
Ms. Johnston also served a three year term (April 2001 - July 2004) with the provincial Department of Family Services & Housing as the Manager of Legislation and Regulations. Her work there related to working with the Legislative Counsel Office in amending child and family services legislation and regulations as well as participating in the restructuring of the child and family services system under the Manitoba Aboriginal Justice inquiry - Child Welfare Initiative ("AJI-CWI"). Under the AJI-CWI, Ms. Johnston participated in the Legislation Working Group and played a central role in developing The Child and Family Services Authorities Act.
Ms. Johnston also worked out of the Indian and Northern Affairs Canada legal services department in the specific & comprehensive claims section and the self-goverment section.
Ms. Johnston is presently involved in converting Treaty Land Entitlement lands for First Nations, into Reserve land under Indian & Northern Affairs Additions to Reserve process.
